Nope your parents said it right. If you think about it all nursery rhymes were politically incorrect. They stereotyped people, were racist and filled with abuse. If you ever get the chance look up some of the true meanings behind them on line. You would be surprised and maybe a little disgusted at what you find. For instance "Ring around the Roses" was supposedly about a family that caught a contagious disease and the neighbors burned them.
