A player gets a +1 if he is on the ice when his team scores a goal. He gets a -1 if he is on the ice when his team gives up a goal. This only counts when the teams are at even strength. A power play goal would not have any affect on plus/minus.

All of the above plus the fact that this statistic is an indicator of how productive you are when you are on the ice, i.e. if you are a defenceman with a high minus you aren't doing your job well. Hmmmm Brian McCabe was -20 last season....nuff said.

McCabe was on the ice when the other team scored twenty more times then he was on when the leafs scored. If you are on the ice and your team scores you get a plus, if you are on when your team gets scored against it is a minus. On the power play you do not get a plus if your team scores, but if your team gives up a short handed goal and you are on the ice you get a minus. That is pretty much it.

In addition to the first answer, if a team scores a goal shorthanded, each player on the ice that scores the shorthanded goal gets a +1 while each player on the ice on the power play gets a -1.

+1 for every goal your team scored while you were on the ice.
-1 for every goal you opponent scored while you were on the ice.

Subtract the two for the +/- score.

Ex. Player A was on the ice when his team scored 94 times in a season. He was on the ice when his opponent scored on 27 times. His +/- ratio is +67. Player B was on the ice when his team scored 67 times. He was on the ice when the opponent scored 82 times. His +/- ratio is -15.
