Think tanks are good when first started. Bringing minds together to share ideas. However over time they just become one minded and are unable to accept new outside information that contradicts what they all believe. That is when they just become walls to support their beliefs and become more radical.

Example; Hollywood is a think tank of sorts. The members of this closed society have meetings, called a party. At the parties they all talk to each other and happen to share information. One brings up a subject that none of the others knows anything about. It sounds reasonable and to be interesting it is retold by those that first heard it to other guests. Eventually this information is accepted and reenforced by all, true or not. At the next closed society party In order to be continually interesting one must now one up the idea. And one up the idea and one up the idea at each party until the reasonable becomes extremely radical. Any one individual that says, "wait a minute this is crazy", must be outed and isolated from them.

People tend to believe the first thing they hear. This becomes their belief system. Their religion. After that it is much harder to change that belief if not corrected immediately. Example: Mrs Jones has been found dead, the police take Mr Jones in for questioning...You have been told a by a trusted friend Mr Jones murdered his wife. You believe it because you believe this person and the longer you hold on to it the harder it is to change it.. Now it takes more convincing and very hard evidence to convince you that he didn`t kill her. You must now accept your friend was wrong, You were wrong, as well as the information you passed on was wrong.

In order for think tanks to work well they have to change out the membership often and not have any seniority system so they don`t become a closed society with closed minds.

Not unless they include someone from the outside .Scientific investigastion is more accurate .Scientists would not have a think tank persay but an investigative and validation board of accepted priciples . Science is fact .Thats why the call them medical arts buildings and not cure centers but treatment centers .Scientific research is fact based with the same results each time .Politics is nothing more then advertising and gimmickry.
Economics is based on certain priciples but does not always react as expected .

How refreshing!

Think tanks transcend political parties.
The information gleaned from pooling intellectual resources can and do get manipulated by political parties.

There is no difference...all think tanks serve a purpose, be it political, economic and/or scientific.
