Every year, some people ask schools, libraries and bookstores to remove books from their rooms and reading lists. People do this because they are offended by a book's subject. Or they do not like the content or language. They say reading the wrong books could harm both adults and children. Apparently some people didn't like what they read and were offended by it. I couldn't find any info on why it was banned either. My personal thoughts on why is because of Gatsby's lifestyle and the excesses that it afforeded him. It has often been said by critics that the book epitomised the age in which it was set - the 1920s in America which is sometimes called the 'Jazz Age'. It was an exciting time, but its basis was money and extravagances that money could buy. The emptiness was in sharp contrast to the purity of The American Dream which held that anyone could succeeed if they strove to imporve themselves and anyone could get wealthy throught hard work and perseverance. Gatsby's father, at the end of the bood, reveals that young Jimmy Gatz had written a scheduld for self improvement, but by now the reader knows that he acquired his wealth by 'bootlegging' - the illegal sale of alcohol. Despite the prohibition, the trade in alcohol continued but fell into the hands of gangsters and people like Gatsby, who appeared respectable on the surface but were, in fact, criminals.

Try going to the American Library Association's website. I am giving you a link to their "Banned Book Week" site. There are other links there as well.
