I'm distributing a Diablo 2 mod, and it appears that several people so far have given me bad reviews because of phantom 'problems' that were answered in the goddanged readme.

Any suggestions on how to force, entice or blackmail people to read the f'ing manual when they have a problem?

A splash screen or other notice on start-up is not possible, because this is a game mod and things like splash screens are beyond my control.

Thanks!

here's a trick I've used in other situations:

A simple validation screen similiar to the "I agree" statement. Instead of check boxes use an input box.

You could possibly have it say "To continue, input code found in the readme file".

In your readme file under known bugs/issues or troubleshooting you could list it there.

1. What is the input code to continue? Answer: "read_the_readme_file"

This would be a crazy way to do it, since you'll get someone to complain about it. Either way, at least they'll have to scan through it or better yet READ IT

No one reads readme in general....

Forcing users to read the readme file for the activation code? some might just give up and says your program sucks right away.

Even if they read the readme.... they will still make errors and say your program sucks.... cause some people read like this:

input -----> no processing ------> output

Get that a lot from my college mates... they keep asking me questions about a certain chapter of a book having trouble doing a programming exercise where the answer is just right in their face.

you can't force people to read the README...you could make it pop up automatically after the software has been installed and you could include a disclaimer that people SHOULD read it, but you can't force anyone...

I don't read the README because I can figure out things on my own. and some people just don't like reading stuff...especially if it's a lot of info

You can but you have to be a programmer to do it. When people done installing the mod, they have to read before clicking on agree. However, most people like me just simply click on Agree without reading. If they give you bad feedback then they must be retarded or you need to revises your mod more.

People barely read the instructions for things, you can't force anyone to do anything.

Even if you had the readme open in front of their eyes, they most likely won't read it.

I don't.

No there is not except to send a message when you distrubute it. Before they can purchase it, have a screen come up telling them
