You shouldn't be experiencing pain when you apply eye liner. There could be a few reasons:
1) make sure you are lining below the lashes on the lower lid and above the lashes on the upper lid. A common mistake made is to put the liner on the mucous membrains touching the eyeball. That can be very detrimental to the eye, and has a tendency to look "trashy."
2) You could be allergic to the brand of eye liner you are using
3) You might be pulling your skin too tight when you apply eye liner. Not only is this painful, but it causes premature wrinkles around the eyes.
Eyeliner should be barely noticeable, so I prefer a dark powder liner that I can smudge with a small brush to give the smokey look that makes the eyes look bigger.
Always start on the outside and lighten as you go in. Eye liner shouldn't go all the way in, but should gradually decrease until you reach the inner corners.
4) Perhaps you already have some sort of eye infection caused by a tainted mascara or eyelash curler. Make sure you always wash your makeup off at the end of the day, using a good moisturizing cleaner. Aveeno gentle face cleansing foam is awesome - it does a great job and it's pretty cheap. If you have been using waterproof makeup, rub a little bit of that baby oil gel on to your eyes and rinse thoroughly.
I hope this helps!

let's not be too condescending here guys. I'm sure she knows not to put it in her eyes. Try using a twist up kind, then you don't have to worry about the sharp wooden edges. or Else, what i do, is get a flat brush and a dark, shadow and use that as a liner. you usually have more options for a liner colors that way as well.
lately I've been using almays eye-intense in the greens (shadows) and using the dark, est green as a shadow and getting a lot of compliments. And I'm 22 so it doesn't make you look, too juvenile either. plus almay is hypo allergenic. hope that helps.

Its probably too hard, I usually put mine on a light bulb (switched on) for a second. A strange thing to do I know, but the heat softens it.
I've found the cheaper the eyeliner the harder it is for some reason.

It hurts because you pulling your skin under your eyes. This bit of the skin is very sensitive. If you are having problems still, use licquid eyeliner.

It shouldn't hurt, maybe you're allergic. Try to buy an eyeliner that's hypoallergenic - Neutrogenna or Almay make pretty good ones and they're not too expensive.

Are you putting it on the lower lid? Because when I first started doing that it hurt, it might be that you have sensative eyes, or it could very well be what Kat said. Try those brands and if it still hurts then, you might just have sensative eyes.

I once had one from Boot's17 and it hurt my eyes, I think its just the kind of stuff they use. Try using a different brand or ask at a make-up counter to see if they can recommed a different brand.
Good Luck!
