Divorced = no longer married. Yes, completely legally free of the other person.

Separated = still married but not living together. Most people do consider it immoral to date other people while you are separated.

By my observation, separation almost always leads to divorce.

They're both legal terms--separated is when a couple lives apart for a period of time with the probable intention of getting a divorce--each state requires a period of separation in order for the couple to "cool down" with their anger and perhaps work things out. If, say, after a year, (as it is in New York State), the couple still wants to end the relationship, they can return to court and get a final divorce decree. Separations are also on paper but they can be informal as well.

This all depends on what you agree on. Divorce means your done. You are no longer married, no long a couple. Seperated can mean many different things. It can still be being faithful to your significant other and just finding yourselves, or it could be testing the waters and seeing if dating other people is what you want. It all really depends on what is agreed between the two parties.

It seems that marrige, separation and divorce doesn't stop some people from seeing other people.
A person is considered married if they have not filed for a divorce. A couple is legally separated only if the couple has successfully petitioned a court to recognize their separation; simply living apart does not constitute separation.
Divorce is the final, legal document pronouncing the marriage disolved.

If you are divorced, you are legally free to remarry. If separated you usually have separate living places,if children involved the court will tell who children are to stay with etc. It is best to not see another while separated as this could effect divorce procedures in the future.

People who are legally separated often date but that's never a good idea since they are still legally married. Divorced means your marriage is officially severed and the court has said your marriage is over.

Divorced is a legal resolution of your marriage. You are free to marry again if that is what you want. Separated is just not together and its up to you to decide what you want to do.

Separated simply means just that. Some people choose to date during that time.
Divorced means you're off the hook.

To me it's the same thing. Because the divorce is inevitable.
And the separation is just the time for it to become legal.

divorced means that you are no longer married to the person. when you are seperated the two are still married but just do not live together. most seperations lead in divorce anyways.
