The Toronto Maple Leafs conceded a fourth, empty-net goal last night to lose to the Ottawa Senators 1-4.
What is the rationale of pulling the goalie when a team is 2 goals down?

Because we are easier to pull then push.

It may also depend if there was a penalty. As soon as there is a penalty called, the goalie may leave the ice. Play continues 'til the penalty-causing team touches the puck, so there is no way for them to score. Then the ref blows the whistle as soon as they touch it.

If it is near the end of the game, teams may chose to pull the goalie to get the extra man advantage. Good teams can turn this into power-play situation. Also at the end of the game, it's more important to get it to within atleast 1 goal, then they can play more comfortably. It takes awhile to score, so they can might pick up some momentum from the man-up goal.

It depends on the time of the game 2:00 left. The coach would think ,we get one goal a minute. Any more than that your risking being scored on any less you may not have enough time. I see coaches down by two and than with 20 seconds left pull the goalie that is just crazy.

I'm not to good in the English language but here it goes...
Something also not mentioned... It boosts the (losing) team til the last second. It teaches the team to fight to the end. If they lose this game, at least they tried hard. Team doesn't feel so worthless and will benefit on future games.
It's important to end the game with good momentum even if you lose. If not, it's going get to you psycologically. That's the difference between winning and losing streaks. Like you guys say "my 2 cents"

You have an extra player on the ice to try and score a goal. You're already losing so it can't hurt but it could help you tie and go on to win. Unless you are playing the Devils, then you have to be careful because Martin Brodeur likes to score!!! And he can do it!!!

They pulled the golie to have an extra player on the ice. So there would be 6 on 5.
