Best thing I've found is to vaccum them really good first. Brooming them doesn't seem to get all the dirt.

If you are really wanting them to look like new as you say, hand wash them using HOT water and just a LITTLE bit of dishsoap. (Use just a tad - a teaspoon will do for 3-5 gal... any more will leave streaks).

Keep your rag as dry as possible. You'll probably want to use some gloves so you can get the water as hot as possible.

The quicker the water dries - the less of a chance there will be water marks. Plus you don't want to use alot of water on hard wood floors anyways.

I'm serious... hand washing them is the best way to get them looking like new - mops will only push the dirt around and you can NEVER get them dry enough for a wood floor. The swiffer mops for wood floors are the worlds cheap way to do a surface cleaning job.

Keep your water clean... what I mean is if the water is getting dingy or clouded from dirt, get a clean bucket of hot water and your tad bit of soap.

Use a Shmop. Just type that word into Google; these can be found easily online. It's short for shine mop, and it's what my Amish cleaning lady asked me to get for my 2600 square feet of hardwood floors. It's almost like a swiffer, but with washable terry cloth covers for the head. It picks up everything (instead of pushing it like a swiffer). I can clean the whole house in under 20 minutes with this tool.

We use the Shmop with plain hot water, water with a little white vinegar, or water and a dab or Murphy's. All of them work very well, and leave no streaks.

Use 1/4 c white vinegar in half pail of water. With well-wrung mop, deodorizes as it cuts grease.
