There is nothing unchanging except the law of change. The polity and society are both interconnected. They are mutually affected by their own dynamics. It is impossible to see an unchanging polity without a proportionate change in the society. India is no exception. But one unique feature of Indian society is the caste system which keeps its ugly face in the polity and society despite the influence of education and modernisation. i do not mean westernisation by saying modernisation. The civilised society should be free of discrimination in any form, leave alone untouchability, which I am seeing even today in rural India. This phenomena really militates against the theory of change.

In Inida Goernment is some sort of a Joit stock company that the political parties run without any investment of their own but withthe capital of the public . that is why here are tto many parties . With a large numver of castes and evry thing being decided on the basis of caste from admission to elementary schools to appointment to publeic services , the whole country is dealt witth under spoil system. It is just a busuiness . In india yoiu can buy any politicinas . siome direstly and some indirectly as they are required t omaintain an image of gentle men. but over all ,it is money tht matters and caste is the perfect and sure instrument to achieve it .So castes which were supposed to be abolsihed are made a permant feature and character of the Indian society. Thre what ever is to e abolished will be established . a country of contradiction. or say oppsites in policy and execution .
In Inida if the Government has decided to do sometning , say raise the price of somethign , they would announce that there won't be any rise in price and thenimmediately after a few day the prices would bve raised . if they say that corruption would be erdicated , they would resort to more corruption and receive more bribes, so they would do just the opposit of what they say . The politicalk parties have changed the society a lot . Now people themselves know that they should ie some extra money to ge anything done accordig to rules . they know that it is through the implementation of the schemes that money can e syphaned off . So if hey announce some scheme , you can be ure that the parties have decided to syphonsome public money for their purposes .The Indian political parties have invented lots of mechanisms in accordance wththe changing times to swindle public money in he name of schemes . they will set the trend for the other countries in the world to follow . they are now in the making of a new democracy through which the dynastic rule of the political families will be established .it seems that the families concerned have been chosen and that a sannath woud soon be issued by which eachstte would be the private property of the family the leader of a particular politicl party and the chief Ministership will devolve amiong the heirs of the leader .o the politicalparties would ultimately create a monarchy through democracy .The Indian politicalparties would create a new political theory this way.
the Indian public are moulded i the philosophy that it is all the same if Rama Rules or Ravan rules . They are not going to rule . They will be subjects only . It is because of this it was easy even to foreiners to establish their rules in Inida . Thei might repeat as history repeats itself . the politicalparties of thepresent days have no policies woth claiming as national policy . They will join together in the name of alliance and can easily sell the country to the higgest bidder and pave the way for a foreign rule again.

Indian Culture : Glorious Myths

“Saare Jahan se achcha Hindositaan hamara” Dr. Iqbals immortal lyrics are probably firmly ensconced in the psyche of every Indian. Our early education has drilled it into us that India is a country of glorious culture, tradition, the “Sone ki chidiya” et al. This view gets further strengthened by various influences that we come across in various stages of life. Films, TV , elders all play out this recurring theme of the glory of Indian culture. One of the ways of driving home the point has been comparing ( selectively in my opinion) our traditions with the supposedly decadent culture of the west and feeling all gung ho about the superiority of Indian values.

My question : Is there any truth in that ? There could be, but it’s way too exaggerated for our consumption. Let’s see dispassionately how the “Indian culture” stacks up.

v The Happy Indian Family Myth : Compared to the west, the Indian family is supposed to have deeper emotional bonds, are dependable and always standing up for each other.

Reality: Even when the joint families were in vogue, the fissures were deep, siblings do not get along well, whether it’s the high & mighty or the lower strata , property disputes are common, parents in their old age are expected to be self sufficient these days.

v The Land Of Spirituality Myth : We pride ourselves in the vast resources of spiritual treasures that we have. One of the biggest selling points to the west.

Reality: Yes, India was a land of spirituality, but that was ages ago. Spirituality, in practice, is a dying tradition today.

v Athithi Devo Bhava Myth: Lore has it that we feed our guests even at the cost of going hungry ourselves.

Reality: An overseas tourist will be fleeced to the skin not only by the Taxiwallah , travel touts etc but also by the government. Discriminatory rates at tourist sites, lewd indecent behavior by onlookers rubbishes the myth. Barring the Taj & a few others, the tourist places are in a state of perpetual decay, filthy and a very bad experience.

v Multireligious Harmony Myth: Freedom to practice & perpetuate one’s religion, various religions that have come into our country have been embraced and live in complete harmony.

Reality : The calm at the surface could be deceptive. If the outpourings of hatred on the net is any indication, we might be sitting on a time bomb. The renowned religious sites are swamped by touts, eager to get into your wallets, the experience of visiting the religious sites is anything but religious. Often leaving a very bad taste in the mouth.

v The next Superpower Myth: Often hailed as the next superpower due to the intellectual capital we have, India is a country to take on the world.

Reality : Lacking in basic etiquette like speaking on mobile during movies, plays, defecating public places, boorish behavior, spitting, dishonesty, corruption, ready to exploit a loophole, does not inspire a lot of confidence.

Having been a visitor to some of the developed countries in the world, I wondered why India is unable to achieve the level of development that they have achieved. The answer almost always points towards this thing called “Indian culture”. None of the above has anything to do with “government” or “money”, the two scapegoats we always like to blame for our failures.

During a previous post on “Non Indian mindsets”, some quoted tales from Mahabharata & Ramayana as examples of Indian mindsets. By Indian culture, I mean whatever the practices that are prevalent today. The past might be glorious & we need to be proud of that as well, but how long are we going to live in it ??

PS: I read a blog on Pramod Mahajan ( One of the few sensible, very logical politicians we have) written by Dr. Karan Thakur. The comments there against a man fighting for his life, words like he deserves a “***** ki maut” left me absolutely disgusted. Hence this post.

Update : Guys, I am disappointed with the quality of comments here. Ironically it tends to strengthen my point that Indian culture might be deteriorating faster than we imagine. I have deleted about 100 comments till now & will continue doing so to maintain at least some level of decency at this post on Indian culture.
