Definetly go with a used bike to start with, as you will outgrow a smaller bike pretty quick. Depends on your size too. A 500-750 cc is what I started on. I am 5'8 135lbs. I started on a Honda Shadow, only because it was cheaper than the Harley's. Go to your local bike dealership, sit on them, get a feel for what you are comfortable with.

One that's small enough that you can touch both feet to the ground while sitting on it, light enough that you can pick it up if it falls over, but big enough that you don't feel cramped up on it. As a general rule, the perfect beginner size for a cruiser may be anywhere from 125 to 800 cc's depending on your strength and height. You ought to visit a motorcycle showroom and check out some different models to see which one fits you - and ignore any pushy salesman who says you really "need" a bike too heavy for you.

Get a Honda Shadow 750 Aero. They are nice bikes with low maintenance with a low seat height. You'll be glad you did. Take the MSF motorcycle safety course first.

A 1200 Sportster? Get serious. You're going to get someone killed with poor jokes like that.

500 cc Vulcan is a good bike. Unlike Harleys, it has a good power to weight ratio, is light, handles well and is... reliable.
