My boyfriend and I live in Naperville and we just took a road trip up north to go apple and pumpkin picking. It was about an hour drive to the boarder of Wisconsin. It was beautiful because the trees are just turning colors. Anyways, we went to Oriole Springs Apple Orchard. We had fresh cider and packed a picnic. We picked our own apples and found perfect pumpkins. It was a lot of fun. here's a website http://www.waga.org/orchards.html
then click on South East then click on Kenosha County and scroll until you see Oriole Springs. Harvest Time is the name of the place where you buy cheeses, cider, brats, burgers. They also have real honey made in the barn and you can watch how they make real cider. Ohhh, they have THE BEST cake donuts! You have to try it!

I don't know if it is possible, but if you have about 4 days go on a train trip! they are relatively inexpensive. And you can go just about anywhere from Chicago. (it's a good place to leave from) Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) and www.vacationsbyrail.com) will help you figure out how far you can go, what you will see, and how long you will be gone ( make sure to tell them the time frame you have to be gone and when you need to be back). I think you really only need at least 3 days. you can also go to the Amtrak web site and sometimes you can see videos of the train ride you will be taking, you can also see the inside of the train and the rooms. If you get a sleeper room it comes w/ meals and they are yummy! you can usually book a coach ticket and once you are on the train they will sell the sleeper rooms that aren't full for a cheap price! but if you just go with the coach tickets, the chairs are actually very comfy and soft. The Train it's self has everything that you could possible want or need. The Train stops at little out of the way places that you would probley never see if you were to travel by car. There is nothing like being in a quaint little town that neither of you have been in, that you can experience together. It can really bring you close. Taking the train is so, so, so romantic. And a truly different experience. I hope you get the chance to explore the possiblities. happy travels!

Swisshotel on Wacker. Travelzoo frequently has special discounts for this hotel which is right off the waterfront. Couple that with a nice play in the theatre district (5 min cab ride) and TONS of nice restaurants and your companion will be most appreciative. Swisshotel also has romantic getaway packages.

You might consider dinner and a show with a hotel room with a nice jacuzzi. The Pirate Queen is supposed to be very good as is Wicked.
Or the Sybaris Hotel in Downers Grove with some romantic suites.

The best part could be a candle light dinner at the signature room, or a walk down the lake shore drive, the buckingham fountain if not flooded with people who have never seen a fountain. How about a cozy part of your apartment?
