As already pointed out coal is the plant remains of prehistoric-historic forests. Coal is produced in the following stages:
Peat.
Lignite (or brown coal)
Sub bituminous
Bituminous
Anthracite.
Each stage represents the driving off of hydrogen due to heating and compaction.
The woods that went to to produce coal grow primarily in the Carboniferous Period (check the dates but roughly 300 million years ago). There are also deposits of brown coal from eastern Europe aged from the Tertiary Period (ie, after the dinosaurs).
Hope this helps.

Coal is ancient vegetation that has been crushed over millions of years as sedimentary deposits over it have become rock. Coal rests in layers, and so it's found in areas where this ancient rock can be exposed (surface mines) or where it's discovered deep underground, whence mines are used to recover the coal to the surface.

coal is fossilised trees that fell a long time ago, we are talking pre historic forests, in time this is covered with layers of soil I think it may be referred to as strata the end result is coal as we know it . This in turn is found under ground in what is called seems, this is dug out as coal

Coal is it's own raw material.
It is mined from the ground cleaned up and sold for burning.

are you for real!
it comes from either deepcast mines or open-cast mines, its fossil fuel laid down millions of years ago, by organic material, i.e. forests, dead animals, other plants, etc
its the same stuff, that produces oil.....
