Let them be the ones that come up with the ideas to change the direction the group is heading. Give them some type of incentive like a pay raise or a pat on the back for having innovative ideas. While implementing their suggestions, slip in a few of your own. This will make you appear less like a dictating parent and more of a knowledgeable older brother.

Also, don't punish people for mistakes they make as the system changes. Punishing people for making mistakes during drastic changes is one sure fire way to turnover your entire department.

Thank them, and make sure they know you appreciate them being open minded about the changes you are making.

Include your staff in planning the goals and strategies. Then they will more easily buy into the change. Change comes hard. The idea alone takes 4-5 years. If the change calls for a change in culture or environment, it can take up to 10 years from the inception of the idea to implementation. From a student of change. Good luck.
