I need to buy a gift for a friend who just had a baby a few days ago. I assume that there are some things that a brand new mommy would be desperate for right off the bat... I just need to know what those are! Please help!

Thank you,

My Favorites after delivery:
Oversized jammies with a drawstring waist, with buttons for nursing, cushy, squishy house-socks, my Boppy, ice and the ringer turned off on the phone. An extra pair of hands is nice, as is a shower, and any amount of sleep feels like a drug.

I'v had 4 children. Here is the best thing I ever got. A friend made dinner for all of us (not the baby lol) and came over to the house to serve it. While we ate she cleaned up a bit took the baby if needed and things like that. A few days later she came back again with some things I didn't have but needed lol. She made dinner so she could check out things. I'm assuming she had the same thoughts you are of not knowing what to give. I thought it was nice to go thu that much trouble to find out what we needed as well as have a meal that my husband or I had to make or ourder out, and be able to eat it without interruption!!! So cool. Here is a thought I did this for one of my friends who didn't have a computer and had no idea that this could be done. Go to websites like Pampers, Gerber, Huggies etc. and they have clubs fill in her information and she will reicive coupons and samples in the mail. That is one way to help out. I like the coupon idea from above too. How helpfull that would be to a new mom...

If she did not have a baby shower then she needs everything, but diapers would be fantastic or a gift card for Babies R Us would be nice. A few people sent me clothing for all sizes up to a year. (an outfit for 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12 month sizes which was a very nice gift). I know everyone loves to give a cuddly toy, but dont. It get ridiculous having people give you too many toys. I ended up giving them away to charity after a while.

The best gift is food. Those first few weeks you are just so tired and busy with the baby that the thought of cooking is too much to bare. You could cook her her favorite meal but do ask if there are foods she needs to stay away from if she's breadtfeeding. If you can't cook offer to pick up a meal from her favorite restaurant. You could also get a gift certificate for house cleaning.

Also, gift cards from Walmart or Target are very much appreciated. I was given a few and they came in very handy when I needed diapers/wipes or a misc item I had not realized that I would need.

Give size 3 diapers. Babies grow so fast and I never used a full case of size 1 and 2. Wipes are great because they don't grow out of them. The best thing new parents need is sleep. Try offering to take the baby for a walk (if you live in a warm climate) so they can get some sleep.

The one thing a new mommy is desperate for is SLEEP!!! If it were me I would tell her that on a certain day you are gonna come over & let her take a nap while you take care of the baby. Don't tell her whenever you needme cause most moms(I know I did this) will never take you up on your offer. Also, give her a gift card to soemwhere that she could get something nice for hersef. you could also do like a friend did for me & fix a gift bag up with lotion, body wash, a candle, etc. The possibilities are endless.

I found that the best gifts i received were diapers, wipes, bath products and little kits that contain nail clippers, thermometer, baby brush and what not. With these you can make up a nice gift basket. My daughter is 6 months old and i still havent had to buy any new bath products because i received so many so if you want to be different buy something else like baby photo albums because a new mother like me takes tons of pictures of her new baby. I have 1000 pictures and no albums.

When I had my baby the 1 thing i did not have enough of was onzies that can snap into a gown. I also got a lot of diapers and wipes that lasted longer than 6 weeks and that was nice because I did not have to buy a lot while on maternity leave and not getting a pay check. Pictures frames and photo albums were also some of my favorites.

Try finding out what type of diapers she wants to use and buy her some newborns in that brand, wipes, is she doesn't beast feed formula is a big thing, or you could try buying her something. Flowers, or something she likes to eat. I know the biggest thing I needed was sleep. Maybe you could take care of the baby for an hour or two so she could get a much needed nap.

depends on how much you want to spend? YOu can always buy an outfit for the baby 0-3 months. Or get the mother a gift, maybe a gift card for Victoria's Secret or something. My husband got me VS stuff after I had my daugher and it was great!
