i have them research...the farmer keeps getting food -there is over 100 in the food container, i have him stop b/c i run out of berries...i've had to restart the game 3 times b/c they die of starvation (ran out of berries) i'm not sure what to do i cant get 6000 tech points to buy the farming, they die before that happens, i've tried buying the construction for more tech points, but again die of starvation, i pick the mushroom when i see them, but not many food points in them...please help...i'm sick of starting over again!!!

Don't start having babies until your food cache is up to 400.
Have as many villagers as possible researching. I usually assign one to farming (this also helps to NOT exhaust the berries) and one on building. Once I have the first hut built and the beach cleared I make the builder into a researcher.
The children you do have can help you gather mushrooms. If you have more than one child, pause the game when you find a mushroom and put all your children on the mushroom.
I've had a total of 22 children pick and get credit for one mushroom. (Each brown mushroom is worth 8 food, each red is either 30 or 45, I don't recall which.)

Chose 2 villagers to be farmers and let everybody else research. Don´t let them leave the research table. When the farmers reach the food bin drag them to the berry bush because if they walk up there it takes too much time. Click on 2x speed and "easy" on the menu to speed up the game.
DO NOT let someone go to the food bin and DO NOT get any babies before lvl 2 in farming because they need as much food as the adults.
When you reach about 350-400 food points let one of the farmers do some researching.

Just have everyone research except for one who will serve as your farmer. It takes a while to get 6000, but just research. Once you get to 6000, get the second farming level then make a female a breeder (NEVER MAKE A MALE VILLAGER A BREEDER!) and have her have babies constantly. Keep getting research points until you max out farming then worry about construction and breeding.

you need to make babies and lots of them...I had the first blond they gave me become a baby machine, once you have babies you need to make them all into researchers to earn the most amount of tech points and go from there.
