If you have only one exhaust pipe on your motorcycle, you only need one louder muffler to replace the original one. But if you have more than one exhaust pipe, which one you want to put your louder muffler on? Will this cause an imbalance of your fuel system because louder muffler is less restrictive and will create more vacuum and will demand more fuel in that part of the cylinders? I don't have a motorcycle and I don't know much about it. If you can give me the best answer that makes sense to me I will pay you $10. That's a promise.

A multi cylinder motorcycle may have an exhaust system with 2 or more mufflers. Usually the head pipes come into a collector, such as a 4 into one, then split back into two mufflers for either cosmetic issues or to muffle with two different mufflers. If you have a two muffler system in order to run a single you'll need to buy a complete four into one system. If the bike comes stock with a four into one, you can simply put a single aftermarket slip on muffler on. You would never just put a single aftermarket can just on one side as you would have a jetting nightmare.

The best respose in my opinion is to buy a book as you dont HAVE a motorcyle. Ignore the Harley people, the vibrators they ride have affected their brains. Exhuast design is a scientific process making it louder can loose a lot of performance. your right about different cylinders having different requirements after fitting 'louder' exhaust. A correctly designed system will maximise performance on all cylinders though, so the same modificaion will USUALLY be made (with an inline four the inner cyls run hotter and with Honda V-fours the rear bank runs hotter so there may be variations)
Good general knowledge how to fix bikes book is
Motorcycles, Fundamenals, Service, Repair.

but its expensive at over $50.00.
I'd recomend saving your money and getting it.
Its a really good book which will give you enough information for years. You obviously are smart enough to use the information contained in it.

I didn't bother to read the other answers, but here's mine:
Use your ten dollars to buy a book. Better yet, save the ten and go to the nearest library. They will have lots of info. on all kinds of motorcycles.

You seem really interested in modifying exhaust sytems. You need to learn how something works before you try to change it. There is a reason it is a SYSTEM, not just a pile of parts.

I agree with most of the other answers.Taking the ten and putting toward a matching set of mufflers is really the best advice.

you should use the 10 bucks to buy a new muffler.thse jap bikes aren't worth 10 cents so a muffler shouldn't be more than a nickel.

If you want to replace the stocks and put on something like screaming eagles then you would do them both. But you should do both of them anyways.
