I'm not scared of them. I just don't like being around them. They remind me of...well, death. I will soon join them, another 15 years and I'll be considered a senior. It is amazing how fast life moves after 30. I don't FEEL or LOOK my age, but there it is all the same.
I guess the elderly are just a reminder that we all age and we all die that we don't want to acknowledge. I worry about my mind going. I worry about odor (which the seniors don't seem to be aware of; they literally smell like decay to me!) and incontinence. I worry about someone else having to do things for me that are personal. I worry about not having autonomy and control. Already it is a darned chore to see. I never wore glasses until 40 and now WHAM! I'm practically blind. My hearing isn't what it used to be either. Background noise bothers me. I didn't even know what background noise was 30 years ago! Thank God for cell phones and information storage devices, without which I'd appear to be a total dim wit at times. If I don't write it down, I usually don't remember it.
This is probably why those of us who seem to fear old people do.
I'm glad there are people out there like you who don't mind working with them. God bless you with patience and kindness every day.
I just hope I die peacefully in my sleep (or I'm FILTHY rich enough to pay for autonomous care) long before I'm at a point of total helplessness.

I think all persons should appreciate elderly people. I am not scared of elderly people, because one can learn about their history, their family and heritage from elderly people. Elderly persons can also teach you to hold true to your values, beliefs and your culture. Many often forget where they are coming from but elderly persons are there to remind us. Give them a Chance and have a little patience with them, they are our foundation.

No I think that old people are very fascinating to talk to. They are very knowledgeable and most are very funny. I too was raised around the elderly, my Dad was a Nursing home administrator and my Mom was an Administrator of an assisted living home. I think that it is sad that people are afraid of the elderly.

No I'm not scared of them... I used to be sad when I saw them, volunteering at the Nursing homes and such, but then someone said to me "Don't be sad, they have had nice long, eventful lives, and they have lots of memories... and so forth. They were young once and had fun, just like you."
And my heart still melts sometimes... And I am sad for them.
But no they really don't scare me. We are all going to be like them one day, depending on other people...
And well they are nothing to be afraid of. Even the meanest people that are old can be won over. You just have to find something......
I had a friend that took care of this old man and he would throw his poop filled depend at her every time she came in his room... She said it happened to her everyday for about 5 months...
Then one day she wasn't in a good mood and threw it right back at him...
She said that old man loved her after that... LOL!!!!!!!
Anyway... So you see....
Nothing to be scared of there sweety...
LMAO!
Have a great week!

They don't scare me they piss me off when they never shut up and just yammer on and on about crap no one cares about. Little children scare me because I never quite know how to interact with them, like at 1 1/2 when the don't really talk and just kind of look at you like "entertain me". Plus I'm always scared I will somehow make them cry or something. I'm like Jerry Seinfeld when it comes to little kids "hello, how are you" lol. But as for the elderly as long as they aren't yapping or driving they dont bother me.

I think what scares us of older people is the fact that they used to be our age. We see them and realize that one day we are going to be them. Getting old is a scarey thing to alot of us. When you are young you have your whole life in front of you but when you get old most of it is behind you and what happens next is hard to comprehend. I personally love to spend time with older people, they have a lot of knowledge if we just take the time to sit down and listen to them.

I'm definitely not scared of old people: in fact, I enjoy immensely talking with them and hearing stories of their past. I find them quite fascinating!
I have a great-aunt and a grandmother who are 92 and 91 years old. My great-aunt has alzheimer's but can still tell you stories of her youth and my grandmother is deaf but sharp as a tack! We have to use a dry-erase board to "speak" with her, but she can talk just fine.
I live in Florida and they live in Michigan, but I try to get up there as often as I can to see them.
Oh, none of the other people in their nursing homes are scarey, either! LOL

No, I loved spending time with my 97 year old grandmother before she died. I would watch her make her Italian sauce and I learned the recipe. Four generations that recipe has been in the family (I've been disowned because of religious differences) I have no children so I guess it will die with me.
