Neither. From all reports, Steve was not doing anything to harm or scare the stingray, but for whatever reason the stingray felt scared and stung Steve.

Steve knew so much about the animal kingdom I am sure he always knew that this was a risk, whether with stingrays, snakes or crocs.

Neither, according to all reports Steve did nothing to provoke the stingray, he was just doing his show and happened to swim over the stingray at the wrong time, the stingray felt threatened and only did what stingrays do naturally to defend themselves. Steve knew the risks of swimming in the area that he was in and the risk that a stingray poses; this was a freak accident that has only happened a few other times. In fact, the only times anyone has died from a stingray attack have been instances where the barb has gone directly into the heart, as in Steve's case.

Steve Irwin engaged in high-risk behavior. Diving with sting-rays would not be considered high risk as sting-rays are generally very placid animals. It was just a freak accident.

The sting ray was covered with sand and steve couldn't see it. when steve swam by the covered sting ray it startled the sting ray then it used self-defense and stabbed him. i would say it is neither's true fault. steve couldn't see the sting ray and the sting ray was just trying to save itself

I hate to say it, but if you really had to blame somebody for his death, it would have to be Irwin himself.

I enjoyed watching him do the things that he did, but one of the reasons he was so famous was because he wasn't much for safety measures.

I'm sure he knew about the threat of sting rays, but he just got too close anyway. It's truly sad- I seriously miss that guy.

I love Steve Erwin, BUT I think it was his own fault....he could have worn chest protection, just in case of an accident...like what happened. Hed be alive today, if he had.

We'll miss him greatly.

More his then anything. He knew the risk of what he was doing and he paid the ultimate price doing what he loved.
