Hypothetically speaking, suppose that I can easily get lost by going around the corner, have trouble determining cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), and have practically no map reading skills, how could I learn my way around a place (town, city, etc.) without getting hopelessly lost? Just to make it a challenge, no reliance on the Global Positioning System can be assumed. Thanks in advance.

The best technique is to find out what series of streets runs in which direction. For instance, all the numbered streets might run east to west and all the streets named after presidents might run north to south.

In my current town, there's a Main Street. All the streets on the east side running north and south are alphabet streets. East A, East B, East C, etc. The ones on the west are West A, West B, West C, etc. The numbered streets run east to west. My apt is at the corner of East G and 25th Street. My office is two blocks east of Main Street on Valley Road (another name for the highway).

If you know how the streets run, you'll never get lost even in the canyons of downtown Denver.

Turn to the heavens my friend. I would utilize the sun by day and the stars by night. In the city or in the woods...there are always ways to tell direction. Remember the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Use the sun to get your bearings. In a city of town find the tallest building and memorize where it is in relation to other places. If lost look around until you see the tall building in the distance. Use other landmarks and remember where they are in relation to the tall one. In the woods you can use clues like Moss, which will always grow on the north side of a tree. People have been finding their way around this planet for over a million years. Who needs maps or modern gadgets? A basic memory and good observational skills are really all that's needed. Association is the key to both memory and to finding ones way around the world. Good luck and have fun on your journeys.
