after being convicted of a probation violation this not for me but for a friend whom i think got a very harsh sentence for a not so harsh crime

File with the court a Motion for Reconsideration and give all the reasons why the judge should consider amending or setting aside the original sentence. It doesn't have to be in any special format. Your friend can right it by hand or you can type it up for him (I recommend the latter). Just style it like every other thing you have received from the court. Names, case number, judge's name etc. File the original with the court and send a copy to the prosecutor.

this depends on the jurisdiction. Your friend may have a right of appeal or may be able to file a motion for reconsideration of sentence.

Hire a lawyer and ask him to plea bargain it down to a misdemeanor..he/ she may even be able to reduce it to communtiy service

Well, your friend chose to commit one crime, was given a chance, then chose to commit another crime. Let him/her live with their decision. I am sure the victim of the crime has to, with no chance of getting it reduced.
