Cos they are sick extortionists.
They could be like sky, but they won't cos they know they will lose money. They are breaking the law. They should just be human and not force us to pay if we don't watch.

the BBC has been running since the start of the last century.
It was set up to provide a platform for broadcasting that was not entirely driven by commercialism (ratings; which is what dictates advertising spending).
This institution needs finance, and it was decided that the 'tax' should be raised independently, so that those who don't want in can decline to pay. It is dependent on the Government's continual agreement that it is a worthwhile institution.
The BBC provides the transmitters that the majority of TV is watched on. Beyond this what you are paying for is the programming - and the thousands of jobs associated with this industry.
The fee might seem a lot but the breadth and depth of programmes is what you are paying for. Radio is probably the best example of this.

It is because the BBC is actually a Government run corporation. It doesn't have funding from advertising like the other channels do. The question of advertising has been posed by the heads of the BBC but has been rejected by the Government, who obviously want to have a channel that they can use to put forward any propaganda that they want.

I think its all down to the BBC owning the television air wave rights and another tax for us Brits in an ever growing rip off country we live in...and yet we pay for a licence for the good "old beeb"..(NOT"!!!) to spend our hard earned money on nothing but property development, property buying, programes and those stupid programes where people get rid their old junk at car boot sales or auctions.
And not only that its a criminal offence to own a television with out a licence, you can go to prison for a min of three years

Because the licence is for the equipment to receive BBC TV, which is what you pay the fee for. If you don´t have a TV you are still supposed to pay for a radio.

because they're independants - but don't try saying you don't watch the BBC to try to get out of paying the licensing fee - apparently owning a tv is enough to prove you watch it. Unfair I reckon!
