Diamond cutting creates dispersion. Dispersion is the individual color flashes that give diamonds the look and color of a diamond. You are not able to create this dispersion in a piece of glass.

I don't fully understand the question, but let's see if I can provide some info:
Glass and diamonds, while similar in appearance, have some very different properties. Diamonds are much more durable than glass, which is very fragile. Diamond is one of the hardest substances known to man. It takes a daiamond to scratch another diamond. Glass will not do it.
If your question is asking why we don't use glass for jewelry, then part of the answer is the durability mentioned before. Also, diamonds are extremely rare, and that makes them more desirable. Diamonds and not glass for some of the same reasons gold is used and valued in jewelry, instead of aluminum.
"Mr. K" is correct about the stones kept out of the market to increase the value, but they are still rare. De Beers has the stones because they control the rare SOURCES of the diamonds. Granite is found all over the place, so is not rare. One does not find diamonds laying around most people's back yards.

Because DeBeers does not sell glass and consumers are uninformed, news flash: Diamonds are not rare either, billions of stones are kept is vaults to control the price
