I used to play the violin, and I liked it but it wasn't a passion, so I quit. I still play around with it from time to time, but not very much. However, a really good friend of mine has always wanted to play but can't because of a condition he has, and it makes his hands hurt too much.

He and I went to a music store the other day and were playing on the electric violins and he could only play for a few minutes before it started really hurting him. I felt so guilty for being able to play but not really loving it, because he really loves it and can't play.

I feel bad because I kind of wanted to take the violin back up anyway and see if I can get back into it, but I don't want to if it means he'll feel bad. Help!

If you really want to play, then go ahead. Just tell your Friend that you will play anything he wants to hear or he can start a song and you can finish it. Or just play when you guys are not together.
You should not have to suffer because of it, it's nice that your thinking about him, but what did he have to say? Who knows maybe we'll hear or see you on TV one day, don't let it slip away or you will be sorry later on. People always seem to do that and then later on they say that they should have or they shouldn't have let it go. Play your heart out.

You should go right to the source to see how they feel. Chances are, if they are a good friend, they will let you go on playing as long as it makes you happy. I doubt you would be rubbing it in since you already feel bad, but they will be happy to know you are enjoying playing the violin. What it really comes down is how they are going to cope not being able to play their favorite instrument anymore. You can only help them get past that. Whether its taking pain killers or getting their hands further looked at is up to them. Enjoy your violin! Take advantage of having such a skill!
Cheers.

I don't think he will mind if you decide to take up playing again. Don't do it in a way that seems like you are being insensitive to his situation. Maybe if you are concerned about how he feels, you should tell him what you are thinking, and see what he says.

that is definately a missed blessing.....I suggest finding a way to involve your friend in your pursuit....let him be the tuner of pieces you play and listen to his ideas about pieces....he could always write music for the violin.

He wants you to because he loves it and can't. Is it really going to kill you to play again? You'd be doing it for him, I know, but if he's your friend, is it so bad to make a friend happy?
