Hmm, interesting question. Actually, I'd rate Wal-Mart one step above a pawn shop because at least you know the ring from Wal-Mart is new, whereas the one from the pawn shop obviously used to be someone else's.

In any case, I do agree that buying a wedding ring at Wal-Mart is tacky. It should be done only if one is driving cross-country to Vegas to get married by an Elvis impersonator. Then it's awesome!

I worked at Wal-Mart for over a year, 6 months behind the jewellry counter too, and honestly, I wouldn't bother since the selection is generally so dull and generic, or so outrageously tacky.

Plus, it's Wal-mart, so they are getting their jewellry from the cheapest suppliers, and generally you have to assume that the diamonds are Blood diamonds or Black Market diamonds because those are cheaper and pass through less regulation to ensure high quality. I'm not interested in putting my money down on that.

If you need a good, sturdy Timex or some cute little earrings for a little girl, sure, Wal-Mart's fine. But Fine jewellry is not exactly their forte.

My wedding band came from Walmart. I'm a bargain shopper and I gotta tell you, I'm not paying $100 for a plain white gold wedding band when I can buy the exact same thing at Walmart for $15. Besides, I agree with the previous poster, there is no reason to spend a fortune on something like that when you're just getting started. You can buy the fancy jewelry later on after you're more established. I assure you that no one will know you got it from Walmart.

as long as you get what you want...good for you if you can pay wal-mart price for it!
when i got married, we decided we wanted silver wedding bands...silver has always been my favorite metal... but we couldn't find them anywhere. plenty of salespeople tried to talk me into white gold, saying it looked the same, but i disagree- am i the only one who can see the difference?? anyways, we finally found a guy in a hippy incense shop who said he could make them for us! i was so glad to get what i wanted and the best part is both rings together cost less than 40 dollars!
what might appear tacky to you could be something very precious to someone else :-)

I'd rather have one from Wal-Mart, than one from a pawn shop, personally... :)

Buying the ring there is fine, having the wedding there is tacky :)

Hey, at least the Wal-Mart ring is new to you, not used by someone with bad memories or stolen.

I didn't get mine there, but my brother did because he didn't want to start off his marriage accruing new debt. I *totally* respect that. Y'all can go fancier later in your marriage.

My husband bought me a white gold wedding ring from Walmart. He asked me first and I said I didn't mind, because I didn't want us to have unecessary debt. You will find that it is the relationship that counts, not the material things. Too much debt can ruin a marriage.

With their buying power, if they advertised as a high quality ring I think I would believe them
