He was real man and died ( drowned) in river after that accident..but after his body was used by a visitor from K Pax..so he really went back 'home' at the end of movie..

With Kevin Spacey's character catatonic and the viewer never really being told "for sure" that he is or is not from another planet.

From what I remember, he goes back to his planet and takes one of the looney's with him.
