For a temporary, removable solution, use Tempura paints. Not only can you keep people from seeing in, but you can create the scenery you want or go for a stained glass effect.
Washes off with water and a little elbow grease.

There is a "frosting" spray that is sold by Hobby Lobby that sprays on glass like hair spray. Use can use a light touch or keep going over the same area to get a heavy frost. After it dries, you can clean it with window cleaner and it will stay on. To take it off, you must use a razor blade.

If you only want to white wash the windows on a temporary basis use windowlene polish. It's a wipe on and polish off cream. You wipe it on and let it dry. It lasts for ages and then when you want the window clear again just rub over with a clean dry cloth and it has the added bonus of cleaning your windows. works a treat trust me.

I wouldn't use whitewash at all... instead I would get a darkly tinted Mac-Tac and cover your windows that way.
I've done this myself... and it works GREAT!!

Grev don't think painting your windows is a good thing to do. Just get blinds, or shutters, or something.
