Good question.
First there are the numbers from 28 to 48 (and sometimes more) this indicates the size of the actual chest, and is measured under the bust. The average for most females is 36.
Next is the letters AA to GG. This indicates the actual cup size, or the size of the boob itself as guys would say. AA is the smallest, and it goes up to GG.
C is average for most women.
So most women would be 36C. Some can have a big chest with small boobs 38 B (although this isn't common) and some can have a small chest with big boobs 32 C (once more, this isn't common) The female body naturally stays in proportion, so skinny girls generally have small "apples" and big girls have busty "melons".
Hope this helps and betters you're understanding.

Depends on the country. For the UK, you have 2 measurements - the one which represents the distance around the torso underneath the breast and the cup size. The first is a number ranging from 28 upwards and goes up in twos (so the next size is a 30).
Cup size starts at AA and goes right up to H or higher! AA is smaller than A.
A bra size consists of both so for example, you could be a 32A or a 44DD.
Hope that helps.

Well, the number, say 34 is the size of the chest, all the way around. The cup size, A, B, C, D, etc, is approx. one inch bigger than the chest size, for each letter. A=1", B=2" etc. As it goes up, the area of the bra cup is increased as well.
So, 34 C, is chest size 34 & the largest measurement around the breasts is approx 3" larger.
Hope this helps...

And just to confuse you even more.....
Some manufacturers are now making half sizes. For example, if a c cup was too small and a d cup too big, then you would be a "nearly D" Personally, I think this is overkill. Most women can be accommodated by the sizes available now. The only advantage I could see to the half sizes would be going down a half size to create a slightly bustier look.

its all about genetics, i was a B cup when i was 13, by the time i was 16 i was a C cup, and have stayed the same since then, many womens breasts may get bigger after they give birth, its all about genetics, and the only difference in the sizes of breasts are the A, B, C, D, a 34 C is not smaller then a 36 C, the number stands for how many inches your body is around, it doesn't have to do with a womans cup size, ( many guys don't know that)

Actually it's A,AA,B,BB,C,CC,D,DD etc, that goes for cup size. Then you get the measurement around the ribcage in inches which starts, I think, at 28 then progresses in 2s so 28, 30, 32, 34, 36 etc. Put them together and you get the size, eg 36D, although apparently most women wear the wrong size bra. Any help?

cup size is determine by the number of inches your bust sticks out from your body and the number of inches right under the breasts (32, 34, 38, etc.) One inch past the bust is an A cup, 2 inches is B three is C etc with the exception of full sized lines which vary somewhat.
