I am in a small business now where we have about 10 employees. It seems like there isn't a day where there is some stupid thing I have to deal with in regards to taxes, government billings, Legal notices, and general BS from employees. I know so many people who got out of business because they hated the BS that goes with it.

I got out of my own business because of the HR and office politics BS. I'm now working for a company where I'm essentially my own boss without the headaches. I like it much better!

Join my H E L L. I had my own restaurant for 9 years. I was my own HR, prep cook, head cook, janitor, decorator, waitress, bartender, everything. At least until 5 p.m. when the help came in. I had anywhere from 9-16 employees any given season.

I was trying to do inventory, order, answer the phone, deal with ad reps, make food for the night! And there was the constant bugging of people knocking at the door wanting to talk to me!

Yes, I did love it, but that paperwork was the biggest bee in my bonnet.

And I'm retired now, and sometimes I miss it, but those were still the best years of my life.

It all depends upon what you want, what you are willing to put up with, and how much patience you have. I have my own medical transcription business. I work as an independent contractor, and I do not subcontract, so it is just me - no employees. That way, I have less headaches. A friend of mine owns her own medical transcription business and subcontracts - she makes alot more money than I do, but she also has alot more headaches. Some people are willing to put up with the headaches in order to earn more money - I just don't happen to be one of them. I don't have the patience for that, but I definitely admire those who do. Best of luck to you.

Once you start having multiple employees you stop being in the business and start managing the people you hire to be in the business. It is a totally different skillset to manage people.

When you decide you like intense responsibility, horribly long hours, and being broke for a few years. When you have an HR person to do it for you, then you have to maintain sales enough to afford them.
