My girlfriend calls it convenient hearing. The mind does not absorb that which is considered unimportant at the time. Men focus on the task at hand, whether it be a football game, a project, driving, etc. If you try to converse at those times about other things, you must first interrupt the train of thought and get our attention. Women also have a bad habit of talking while they have their backs turned to us. I guess we are supposed to be psychic then also, because we sure as hell can't hear you.

Scientifically speaking there was a study completed. It is not a joke but proven that men do not normally hear tones that range within the normal variables in a woman's voice range and vice versa. It is basically a similar study which was recently completed regarding teen-agers and cell phones and certain volumes and pitches of the ringers cannot be picked up by adults. Then again, there is also selective hearing where you pre-occupy yourself with something of a more interesting nature and only pick up words that you would find of interest.

I don't know about all men, but I can block out things I don't want to hear. When I'm concentrated on something, I pretty much block out everything else. Like if I'm walking from my dorm to class, I'm usually concentrating on class, girls, homework, tests, etc. So I don't notice people waving or saying hi to me. Frequently, I'm asked the question, "Didn't you see me?" I usually have to ask people to repeat things because I'm usually only halfway listening, if that. I'm called an asshole a lot because of these things.

Men can't hear women once they reach a certain words per minute talking speed. Normal conversation, we can hear. When women start yapping away, all we hear is that sound of the ocean. Also, it should be noted, that sports sound about 5 times louder in our head compared to speech. So if a game is on, we basically can't hear anything else.

It's called selective hearing (and some ladies I know suffer it as well)
You can shout something important at them, and they wont hear, but mumble some remark on the other side of the house and they'll shout: I heard that!

I think women possess this talent more so than men. Women have to deal with kids and work more often than men. The talent better suits the female agenda.

absolutely, anyone can do this if they focus hard enough or if they try hard enough. It really isn't that difficult just focus on something else or force yourself to listen to something else and focus on that sound then again if your really good you can just listen to several things a once and then when the woman ask you if you are listening you can just blow her away by repeating back what she just said while still knowing what just happened in the game your watching.
