A Paralegal is the person that does all the research that the lawyers use in court cases. You are not a "glorified secretary", a lot of paralegals accompany the attorneys to court, it is a thankless job but if that's what you want to do go for it.....

As a paralegal, you can work for the Federal or state government, you can work for a law firm or just one lawyer, OR...in some states you can go into business for yourself. It depends on what the laws in your state will allow you to do as a paralegal specialist. Some states require paralegals to do all work under the supervision of a lawyer, but other states will allow paralegals to do certain things without direct attorney supervision, like preparing wills and powers of attorney, drafting divorce decrees (perhaps even representing clients in divorce court), filing papers for adoption/name change, assisting executors of estates with the probate process, drawing up simple two-party contracts and bills of sale; the list goes on and on.
If you're considering a paralegal career as a means to go into business for yourself, you should also consider going through the process to become a notary public -- I know paralegals who do notary dutiies almost full-time by getting hooked in with mortgage and finance companies. They E-mail you the documents, you print them out (which means writing off your computer, Internet connection, printer, toner/ink, paper, etc.), you go to the person's house and walk them through signing all the documents, then you notarize them at your leisure and send them to the mortgage/finance company using their UPS or FedEx account. You can make anywhere from $60.00 to $120.00 per trip depending. Imagine doing three or four notary trips per day -- and I know people who do -- you could make over $50,000.00 a year AND be able to write off your car, gas, and mileage as business expenses. The opportunities are there...

You could open your own business and be your own boss. Keep in mind though, you will have to gain your own clients and keep them happy. You will have a reputation you will have to mold.
Good luck on whatever your choice is!
