The domain is actually something.something, as in "AOL.COM" or "YAHOO.COM"

The first part of the domain is called the subdomain. You can have as many subdomains as you want. It could be "something.something.soemthing.yahoo.com" and that would be perfectly acceptable. "www" was the subdomain of choice when the web first started, so most sites used that prefix. Now with the explosion of the web, many sites are having multiple subdomains and you start to see the www prefix disapearing. On many sites however listing the subdomain is required, on other sites its not.

The web has changed a little. Almost all the sites now are just http:// and no www - if you type in www..... it just disappears when the screen comes up....... Take a look at yahoo answers - there's no www there either.

The www prefix is assumed...your browser automatically puts the www. in front of safari.informit.com

Those are called SUBDOMAINS. Webmasters like to use it for a different part of their site. It's a way of dividing the web site up. Just like ANSWERS.YAHOO.COM

I really don't know... but I must say that is quite interesting! My guess would be... if you open command prompt.... and you type

ping www.yahoo.com you get 209.131.36.158

then try yahoo.com and you get 66.94.234.13

this means that they are separate IP addresses! So that is my best guess.

the ip for Safari.informit.com is 193.194.158.109

The names like yahoo.com are just like another way of going diretly to 66.94.234.13 (I think that ip actually redirects you somehow to the one that yahoo uses which is 209.131.36.158)
