David Beckham was appointed as England captain by caretaker manager Peter Taylor for the first time in a friendly against Italy on 15th November 2000: final score 1-0 to Italy.
The previous matches were:
11 October 2000 v Finland (0-0), World Cup qualifying, captain Martin Keown, caretaker manager Howard Wilkinson.
7 October 2000 v Germany (0-1), World Cup qualifying, captain Tony Adams, manager (for the final time) Kevin Keegan.
Alan Shearer retired from international football on 20th June 2000 when England were knocked out of the Euro 2000 tournament by Portugal (thankfully no C.Ronaldo then!).
