Okay, we're speaking in hypotheticals here. I keep hearing how the umps 'cheated' for the Yankees by delaying and cancelling the game last night.

This is wrong, and here's why: It was drizzling... and the forecast predicted heavy rain. The umps are of the opinion that there's an hour to an hour and a half of rain coming.

If they start the game... and call a rain delay for an hour after the third inning... then Mussina and Verlander are gone... and both teams have to go into their bulpens.

So who would be hurt more here? The Yanks, by getting only 3 innings from Mussina?

Or the Tigers... who would have their Ace, Justin Verlander for only 3 innings... and then probably not again until game 5?

well first of.....the umps didn't call that game. MLB called the game......
If you had seen how the weather systems were lined up last night in NY, you would have seen the concern about if they could have really got a full game in........

if they had started the game and didn't finish, both teams would have wasted a start by both pitchers....even if they had got in a couple of innings and delayed it a couple of hours, then started playing again, the starting pitchers, more than likely wouldn't have re-entered the game....again, it would have been a wasted start by both teams and probably would have put a bigger load on both bull-pens......

there is too, much riding on this , to waste a start by good pitching........

as much as i've seen on TV, and read in the sports columns about it, it seem to me the media is trying to start a controversy that really isn't there.....
nobody really benefits....other than the teams both get quality starts from quality pitchers

I agree that calling the game was the right thing to do.

The Umpires didn't "cheat". In a post season game, MLB makes those decisions. In a regular season game, it is up to the Home Team to postpone a game BEFORE it gets started.

AFTER the game starts, then it is up to the umpires.

But I think this postponement will hurt The Tigers more.

But, it really doesnt matter. The Tigers HAVE TO GO OUT AND PLAY BASEBALL! As do the yankees.

If The Tigers go out and play the way they are capable of, then it will be a tight game.

Either way, it sure is exciting to see The Detroit Tigers play in October!

The Tigers 3 game series with the Royals was gut wrenching and took it's toll on them. I think the Tigers benefit a little more simply by squeezin in another day without the game and all of the mental and emotional ramifications. The extra rest should help the Tigers. We'll see.
