..........or have they become gay because society has rejected them, and they have formed a subset to fit in to - as they feel they can't fit into the main set?

....some iteresting answers so far..but some of you are missing the point. Maybe people become gay, because society rejects them and society doesn't want to accept responsibility - so allows them to form this subset.

What a strange couple of questions. Of course there's rejection, but acceptance is growing and will continue to do so. You speak as if there's a clubhouse somewhere where all gays go to meet up and discuss strategy.

Just an example: A 12 year old, alone in a small town, who has reached puberty and realizes she is attracted to girls, not boys, isn't thinking about subsets or how she can thwart society. She is distressed because she already sees the bigotry out there, she already knows that her attraction for girls doesn't "fit in" with the majority of her classmates and she knows that her life is never going to be the same as her straight friends. Being gay comes first, then comes the struggle with society.

You are reaching pretty far to support a possible "choice" position. If the fictitional girl I speak of really wants to fit in, she can and will, by hiding her true sexual orientation. Sadly, so many girls and boys do this to avoid the idiocy of stereotyping and taunts from their peers. They spend years with struggles that straight kids never comprehend. It's insulting and patently ridiculous to suggest that a gay person "becomes" gay because they don't fit in to begin with. Geez, just accept it. Gay people are gay - not rejected straights, not possessed by some imaginary devil, not societal misfits. More and more, and this is a good thing, the misfits are beginning to be those who keep insisting that gays are really just straights who have been led astray.

I've come to believe that society is a lie and doesn't really exist. Some people will reject them, others won't. If you just associate with people who like gays, only read such newspaper, only do business with gay friendly people and only watch gay friendly TV, what you take in as society changes completely.
Of course it is impossible to block everything else out, but you can choose pretty much what you concentrate on and this will make a lot of difference.

I think today society has become more "accepting", however I still see and hear the hate each and every day. Working in a restaurant you get the opportunity to meet and talk to all kinds of interesting people, all with different believes and I hate to say it but society still tends to reject because they are gay.

People are definitely rejected because they are gay, I don't think it is the other way around..you either are or you aren't and I believe they know from an early age but are scared to say anything. I have no problem with gay people, who am I to say who someone can love? I also have some very funny gay friends.

What that makes no sense people are gay because they want to. and if you think putting them on shows talking about them in shows giving them the best week ever is being rejected then you need to read the defenition of rejection again

okay here is what I think .First they are rejected from society or so everybody thinks. I mean friends of mine who are gay(males) said that most gays say that they are born that way.Well both of them do not seem to think that is true. They say they started out liking women but never got that butterfly in the stomach feeling.Till they started to be with guys.I think it goes both way I think some are rejected because of being gay and some are gay because of being rejected.Hope this helps some.

Ignorance is what projects the rejection. That may as well be our society today.

No. Only ignorant people reject anyone that doesn't fit in the "norm". But there are tons more people coming out...if you've noticed.

MY stereotype of gay adult men has a tendency to the circuit boy, the slender aesthete, or the burly "bear," none of them actual rejects, plus the nerdy severe-college youngster, like i develop into--earlier there have been nerds--who does get stamped "Reject." (Oddly sufficient, countless of the girls contained in the class in basic terms in the back of me looked quite attracted to me, yet i develop into by no potential attracted to them, even tho i develop into sexy sufficient on the time to have an significant str8 ingredient. I *think of* it develop into loss of self-self belief on my section, too.) And while i think of roughly it, I think of maximum lesbians, butch or femme, as extra bodily extra healthy on uncomplicated than str8s i do no longer think of i've got ever had an concept that gays have been extra unhot than str8s! Do str8s truly think of we are? or in basic terms the occasional fool like the only you quote? long P.S. to stupid Tigger: in case you certainly do no longer comprehend, there's a stereotype of the lesbian seem. She (the stereotype) has a "undesirable" haircut--which potential it truly is mannish: short and hassle-free to shelter. She wears plaid shirts. She wears pants. She makes use of a attractiveness that is a boy's, or at minimum isn't "tremendously." this is, of direction, the "butch" lesbian. If each physique is familiar with a stereotype of the "femme" version, i could be involved to take heed to approximately it. no longer so very oddly, the stereotype is each so often actual. The Salt Lake Weekly has in basic terms printed a profile of Babs postpone, interior sight actual materials agent and community radio host (i've got listened to her on and stale for years), and longtime "out" gay activist. i do no longer think any of the photographs teach her in plaid, yet in any different case . . . of direction i'm completely keen to have faith which you have none of those characteristics and are in basic terms as lesbian as Babs is. after all, i'm a gay male, and a great form of, in line with risk maximum, of the same old markers (appeance and behaviour) do no longer prepare to me.
