A critic described him as " a man who wishes he could write songs as great as the ones which inspired him" Do you agree>?

He's a class act and he's worked with some major names as a collaborator - which proves how highly regarded he is by other greats.

Writing on his own, his music can sometimes miss the mark (for my tastes anyway), but his lyrics always hit their mark. If I'd written "Alison" (which he did a very long time ago), I'd have simply retired coz it doesn't get much better than that. But he just went on to get even better.

And no - he didn't write She

No, far from it. He has proven consistently throughout his career that he can write instantly memorable melodies and sharp lyrics across a huge range of styles. Admittedly he's produced his fair share of rubbish, but anyone who has had a 30 year career has done much the same. Anyone who can write songs as challenging, beautiful and daring as 'Shipbuilding' or 'I Want You' can comfortably be labelled a great songwriter.

Of course Costello himself would have short shrift with any music critic, let alone one who has a go at him, and is widely credited with coming up with the much repeated quote "Writing about music is like dancing about architechture - it's a really stupid thing to want to do"!

He was great, don't listen to the critics they are always sour. Just listen to Pump It Up or Oliver's Army.

I love the song "She", which appeared in the film "Notting Hill" but I'm not sure if he wrote it.
