Example, if you get a license, have your church wedding and the certificate is signed, is that it or does the certificate have to be registered somewhere? Just curious.

After the marriage certificate is signed by the bride and groom, the witnesses and the officiant, it must be sent back to the place where you got the marriage license from. On the back of the marriage license, it should say where you should send it to. Usually, the officiant takes care of mailing the license back to the office. After the license is received and processed, you should receive a marriage certificate (proof of actually being married) within a couple of weeks in the mail. You can also bring the license in person to the office, and you should be able to walk out with the marriage certificate the same day.

The certificate needs to be registered. Our preacher kept part of the marriage certificate to turn it in (at the courthouse maybe?). I believe we then got an official marriage certificate through the mail.

Differs in most states, but usual is to have a license signed by an official and returned to the local clerk's office for registration

If not sure, call the clerk's office

It's legal, but you will have to get a certified copy. That usually costs about 20 to 30 bucks, depending upon where you are. Usually the original may be good enough.....but some places, especially government offices, want to see the certified copy.
