I will be moving in December and am lookng for any suggestions for packing things. I thought it'd be a good idea to start now, rather than save it all for a single weekend, but I have NO idea where to even begin! :) It's really overwhelming, so I thought doing it bit by bit is a good idea. Any suggestions on what I can start packing now? Anyone have any kind of plan or list you've followed when moving yourself? Any websites or groups that offer helpful tips (the ones I've found so far really aren't much help)?
Thanks in a advance. I appreciate any and all suggestions.

I just moved two months ago and have several tips for you:
* One thing that helped tremendously was the packing paper I got at Home Depot. It is like newsprint but no ink so nothing comes off and you don't need to wash everything after you get to your new home. Also, it's totally recyclable. I ended up going through about 2 boxes of that stuff. I packed EVERYthing that was potentially breakable in this stuff (as opposed to bubble-wrap). Even if you have to put on several layers, its still way cheaper than bubble/plastic wrap and is less bulky.
* Get the same size box for most of your stuff (and the smaller the box the better). I used the book sized boxes from Home Depot almost exclusively. I had 2 bedrooms plus a storage unit in the basement and most of my stuff fit into the small boxes. I think they were 12x12. This way you can stack the boxes on themselves and it will be easier to move them/configure them in a truck. I started early like you and just stacked them up against the wall in my living room.
* Assemble a bunch of boxes at a time. You can do this while you watch TV. If you have 10 or 20 small boxes assembled at a time, packing will go SUPER fast and you won't lose momentum. I'd assemble a bunch of boxes one night and then pack them the next night. “Rinse and repeat” as they say until your packing is done.
* Pack your books first. Since they are heaviest they will need to be the bottom row of your box stack. Put all of your supplies on your kitchen table (tape, scissors, giant Sharpie, etc.) and make that your home base for packing.
* Depending upon where you live and how much stuff you have accumulated you may need professional help for stuff like a sofabed which is heavy and bulky. If you are on a really tight budget and really can't afford to hire professional movers, move your delicate items yourself and then hire some college kids (or neighborhood high-schoolers) to lift the bulky / unbreakable stuff. If you can hire professional movers, use a service like Angie’s List to find the best mover you can afford. Needless to say have everything packed and organized before they get there!
* Check out the "free" section on Craig's List for cheap / used boxes. I listed mine on Craig's List because I had a ton and they were only used once. And if they are in OK shape after your move, pass them on!

Some moving tips:-

1.Stay organised. Staying organised can't be emphasized enough when it comes to important moving tips for relocating.

2.Gather packing supplies far in advance. Label all boxes clearly. Make sure that all boxes are labelled clearly with their contents. You can take it a step further by using colour coding to organise where boxes will go in your new home.

3. Figure out your move strategy
How are you going to get from point A to point B on moving day? For shorter moves, you'll either need to assemble some very nice friends with trucks or consider renting a truck for the day. If you have a big family to move or you'll be moving a long distance, you'll want to price out moving companies.

Start packing things that you don't use on an everyday basis. Put things that go into each room in their own boxes. (Bathroom items in one box, each person's bedroom stuff in their own box, etc.) Label each box.
Remember when taking down your bed frames and the like, put the screws for each bed in their own container. I use labeled empty baby food jars for things like that. But, if you don't have any you can use labeled zip lock baggies. The best way to keep them all together is to put them in a small box all together. When you open the box with the screws, nails, etc, you can clearly see which screws go to which bed and what nails hang up what item.
Go ahead and pack some of your sheets, and towels now. Leave out only what you will need until you move. Do the same with your pictures, and nic knacks that you have sitting around.
Stack the boxes that go to the same room on top of each other-again clearly labeled.
When it's time for the move, keep the boxes for the same rooms together. Unload each box in it's own room. Don't just stack them up in the living room and then try to start moving them. From the truck straight to the room it goes to.
I would suggest that as you start packing, determine if there are things that you no longer use and give to charity or disgard. For those things you aren't sure of, put them in a box, label it, and then store it away at your new home. After six months, the boxes you haven't opened and taken items from-should be tossed or donated.

It is stressful moving,so it is important to be organized. First pack all your spring and summer clothes and if your know where they are going to go in your new home , label the boxes with that room. If there are kids involved in the moving give each child a different coloured label,so at moving day the movers know that all red labels go to "Bob's" room.I think the kitchen is the hardest room to pack. Use tea towels to wrap dishes in or use tissue paper. You can buy paper to wrap dishes in from a moving company. I would not recommend newspapers as the ink comes off and you will need to wash them before you put away. Not what you want to be doing. On moving day have a box filled with things you will need right away, such as toilet paper, coffee pot ,coffee mugs ,spoons, sugar and any favourite toy that may be important to your child. What ever you think is important. One last hint..if there are fragile boxes I have found that if you label it "Stereo equipment" it is handle with care.It can be stressful but also exciting.

Put heavier items on the bottoms of boxes, lighter items on top. And if you’re loading the truck yourself, pack heavier boxes first, toward the front of the truck, for balance.

Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes. Fill in gaps with clothing, towels, or packing paper. Movers often won’t move boxes that feel loosely packed or unbalanced.

Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box. It will make your packing quicker and your unpacking a lot easier, too.

This early, you would probably only want to pack items that are not used very frequently such as items that are in storage, off-season clothing (summer, spring), books that you don't need to refer to, maybe miscellaneous little stuff that's not used very often.
