If you should chose one as the best, whom it would be:

Yngwie J. Malmsteen? Joe Satriani? J. Petricci? Steve Vai?

Justify your answer!

My answer: Y. J. Malsmteen. My justification: he is a god; gods don't need further explanations; they simply are the best, always and everywhere. The others are the others. He is THE guitarist.

From that list I would go with Yngwie J. Malmsteen. I'm not a big fan of any of them however. The music is too busy and they step all over the rest of the band. To be honest it'd sound better if they played alone and skipped the band. All the band does is clutter the sound.

My favorite guitarists are not anywhere near as technical. Jimmy Paige played chords that defy human physics. His sense of melody was awesome. His solos were not much but solos to me are vastly overrated. They are for live shows really.

David Gilmore. This guy could make a guitar sound like anything. When he did it always had a purpose. Always contributed to the music. His solo in the song Time was one of the best ever. While it didn't make you go wow from raw technique, it is technically interesting. What really counts is that it is awesome to listen too. You do not have to be a guitarist to appreciate it. Every note fits and contributes. No showing off just to show off. Gilmore has an amazing bag of tricks. Wasn't afraid to step aside and let a really wicked bass line shine when the music called for it. The sounds blended. As much as Waters and Gilmore hated each other the stuff they wrote blended perfectly and was as harmonious as they were disharmonious as people.

Tony Iommi. Again Black Sabbath won't be known for being too flashy. However Sabbath pioneered the sound that is used all throughout rock. They changed how we listen to music almost as much as the Beatles but without the comercial success the Beatles had.

Randy Rhodes was the other half of the equation that made Metal, Grunge and Hard Rock what it is today. Rhodes I feel was every bit as technical as the guitarist you mentioned. Unlike them Rhodes is more melodic. So Rhodes will step back and play less complex stuff when it calls for it. I like Rhodes because showing off wasn't his goal. It just happened when he wrote something difficult to play. His solos are showy but like Eddie Van Halen they are often melodic even while showing off. So there is music too it not just pure dry technique.

Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains is like Jimmy Paige. A master o melody and sound. He crafted his guitar to what the song was attempting to accomplish. The guys you listen too. Every song has the same sound. In fact they consider it a signature sound. To me it sounds like inflexability. When I've heard these guys trying to be heavy it was an abysmal failure. When they try to play mellow again the sound is too inflexible. It comes off too dry. Cantrell mixes his sound to fit what he's trying to do. He's not affraid to pick up an accoustic and just strum. He can fly on an electric and everything inbetween.

In short it's cool to be able to do wicked things on the guitar. It however defeats the purpose if you start out intending to show off rather than write a song. The 3 you mentioned are noted for raw technical ability. None will be accused of being melodic or of writing great songs. Just being able to play riffs others either cant or wont. To me that's not good music and if the music isn't good all the heroics in the world can't save it.

Malmsteen is great but Satriani is THE guy.

He's not just a speed freak with the scales and arpeggios, he really understands composition and texture. Its not just his solos, its all the little subtleties, the clarity of tone, the fills, the little sonic tricks and his variety of sounds. Oh, and he can do the scales too.

Hendrix! But I additionally love Toni Iommi and Kirk Hammet. Hendrix' large songs incorporate Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Hey Joe and the Star Spangled Banner. Toni Iommi's received Iron Man and Crazy Train. And Kirk's received LOADS of stuff.

Joe Satriani, his music has so much feeling in it. He knows exactly what he wants his guitar to sound like. He can make any tone he wants. He is an all around great guitar player.
