Using the context of settlements:

a linear village would be long, perhaps based along a main road.

a nuclear village would be clustered in a compact 'bundle' (for want of a better word).

and a dispersed village would have houses spread about over a larger area.

Do a search throw the Internet for Words+spellings.
You can get a better description of there meanings or Words+linear then each subsequent word.

I agree with the others. Homework and school are about learning. He can't learn if someone else gives him the answers. It's a good opportunity for him to start learning to use a dictionary. It also will start teaching him to figure things out for himself. That will be especially useful in higher grades, and even in college. I would suggest you encourage him in that direction.

Good practice for him to learn how to use a dictionary, if you can lay your hands on one.
As for learning spellings, he can use an acronym to help learn difficult words, such as Beautiful Elephants Climb Aeroplanes Under Silly Eggs, to help learn the word BECAUSE.
