I reckon not many people from USA knows Malaysia. Only people involved in international trade and businesses, seasonal tourist plus backpackers.
However, Malaysia is unique in its own way. It is not as touristy like Thailand but it is not sterile like Singapore either. Beaches, food, clubs, hotels, shopping and restaurant are superb. However, I am not sure about youngsters (skaters/punk) around big cities like in KL hanging around Bukit Bintang annoying people! While it is a Islamic country, the Government and the people are liberal. The only big problem I have with Malaysians in general they seldom greet you like 'hi' or 'goodmorning'. However it doesnt mean they are not friendly. Once you talk to them and get to know them, they are warm and friendly as they could be.

Been to KL & Penang. Liked them both, Penang for the beach and KL because I love cities. The food was UNBELIEVABLE (unbelievably good). I'd go back in a heartbeat.
