I have a client that has been coming to my cafe for years. He is totally aggressive and impolite to me and my staff. He is in a class of his own, he manages to push things beyond any reasonable levels. There are too many examples to give, but I don’t think examples are necessary for you to help me with my question.
My question is, how can I deal with him? I can’t tell him not to come anymore, because I’m worried that this will just cause him to flip out and set up a continuous sate of anger against us. I can’t explain to him that his behavior is wrong, as I have already tried and according to him, we are the rude ones. To top it off, he is Arab, and he seems to be playing up the stereo type that people tend to have against arabs. His anger for us seems disproportionate to anything we’ve ever done to him. Which just for the record, we’ve never done anything to him. I don’t know how to handles this and it causes me a lot of worry.

I just wanted to add, that I don't know why he keeps one coming back. I have tried to discourage him. I have also tried to ignore him. He is a difficult one to ignore. For example, we were out of salt yesterday, and had a totally fit that we were out of salt. We had salt, only no to go packages of salt. So he took a napkin, and poored half a salt container into the napkin and gave us the dirtiest look. He always says hi to me on the street in a very aggresive, sarcastic way, and when I try and ignore him, he starts getting mad at me, on the street cause i don't resopnd to him!!!!

You have the right to refuse service to anyone. He comes in again, explain that he will no longer be served at your establishment and that he must leave. If he does not go, call the police. when the police arrive have him arrested..............

Been there done that!!!
1- Ask him not to treat you or your staff in that type of manner.
2- If he refuses perhaps a dose of his own medicine.
3- Just because he's Arab doesn't give him the right to treat you or your staff that way.
4- Have you tried to ask a third party for help like another Arab I'm sure you have other Arab customers with courtesy and compassion
5- Don't worry if all else fails Don't be afraid to ask him not to come onto your business until he learns to behave like a human being.
6- You are not paying your employees to be abused by your costumers.
7- Be careful those are terms fora law suit from employees "hostile work environment"
8- You are not obligated to take abuse from anyone, you work to hard and too many hours for a rude little man to try and break your moral.
Please don't despair not all Arab's are like that.
I am Puerto Rican don't get me wrong but you are not here to take abuse from no-one it could be god himself figure of speech.
I believe there is good in everyone but being the case of a few rotten apples don't let it get you like this and member this is your
COUNTRY!!!! U.S.A.
love the way that sounds.
And keep an even tone voice when speaking and look him in the eye and speak clearly. And he will understand you are serious....
GOOD LUCK!!!!

First of all, this guy sounds like he really likes your place for whatever reason. Secondly, you should be careful how you take him. Alot of arab men sound very gruff and hostile, but are really nice. Maybe you should ask him if he is having a bad day and then take it from there. We have no idea what goes through peoples minds, but you should take the time to find out. He may be worth getting to know. You might be surprised at how much you can learn about him. Good luck and try to be nice. Kill him with kindness. That always works.

I understand what you are talking about, I've been in customer service for over 35 years and unfortunately if you want to keep him as a customer there's not much you can do. If you don't then the simplest thing to do would be to call the police the next time he acts up and have him forcibly removed. It doesn't matter what nationality he is there is no excuse for rudeness or bad manners and you or your staff do not have to put up with it.

You have a right to refuse service to anyone. Tell him he is no longer allowed to come into your place of business. If you feel he will cause a scene, make sure a police officer is there when you do it. If he finds you all so rude, WHY does he continue to come there? He makes the choice to come in, so you have to make the choice to keep him out.

Do your job, but only the bare minimum for him. When he plays on the poor Arab me, you say poor waitress me. All these customers treat me like **** because they are the customers and they think they have the right to. It is so wrong the way some people treat waitstaff. Hope it helps.

If he considers you all rude, then why does he keep coming back?
Tell him you are tired of the rudeness and inappropriate behavior from him and if it continues, you will have to ask him to leave and not come back. Yes, you can do that. Nobody has to take this kind of abuse and since it is your establishment, you need to stand up for your employees.

maybe the next time you see him outside of the cafe and he says hello, you could strike up a conversation steering him toward the reasons for his behavior. perhaps he's like that with everyone, like it's just a part of his personality to act that way.
