ur right- same thing happened to me two days ago- my last insurance co who i chose to cancel my policy with cos they were charging too much took the payment off my card anyway even though they reassured me that the payment would not be taken as i'd called to cancel my policy. Fkrs still haven't given me my refund back- no ourtesy call to say why the fk it happened so i'll deal with my cc compay directly to retrieve the funds that i simply cannot afford to have go on my card. Bunch of fkrs- nobody buy insurance from Dial Direct- they are a bumch of thieving bunch of fools who say they 'may have made a mistake' and refuse to call when they promised with backup. Spineless bastards!

If you and the company are in the UK, the Sale of Goods Act applies. The goods must be of "merchantable quality" (that means fit for their intended purpose) and they must be as described. If you have a valid complaint under either of these headings, the sale contract is void and you are entitled to a refund.
Find the company's registered address (you can get this through the Companies House website) and send a letter (yes on paper!) addressed to the Company Secretary setting out:
1) What you bought, where and when.
2) How much you paid
3) Why you think you're entitled to a refund
4) What you've done so far to get a refund
5) Say you want a refund within 14 days or you'll take legal action.
If you're still ignored, take out a County Court summons. You can do this online.

I guess it depends on the company.
I've found that you can take almost anything back to Walmart and get a refund as long as they sell the product and you didn't break it. You don't even need a receipt.
Not so with Target. My girlfriend bought me something there and even though we know exactly where it came from, they made her show the check she used to purchase the product and still wouldn't give me a refund. They made me so mad.
That's why I never go to Target anymore.
If someone rips you off, contact the Better Business Bureau or start making phone calls to their corporate office or consumer advocates. Don't let them get away with it. Tell everyone about it and let them know you don't approve of such behavior. They'll feel it when we quit shopping at their stores or buying their products.

Tell um you'll call the Better Business Bureau if they don't give you a refund, at which point it would go on to the federal level.
