I have heard the October 5th answer before. It's because most people are having sex around new years eve and conceiving babies. My best friend's birthday is today and she never fails to remind me of this little bit of trivia.

October 5th is roughly 9 months (a few days more) after New Year's Day. I wonder if many couples were so blotto-ed that they had a lapse in judgment and decided to procreate or simply had forgot to use protection.
