smitty, if you were comfortable enough, you would have seen the 'vagina monlogues'. We are doing it, you just aren't paying attention, especially if the word 'vagina' is mentioned

Republicans have put a lot of effort, at the behest of Carl Rove do do what is called 'defining' their opponents.
So even though most welfare recipients are on welfare due to catastrophic health events - they use terms like 'Welfare Queen' on their various public venues such as talk radio rants, newspaper columns and books.

Feminists have been labeled with the term 'Femi-Nazi', and portrayed with old fringe examples such as lack of grooming, hatred of stay-at-home-lifestyle and lesbianism (also 'defined' as man-haters). All this even though feminists call only for equal opportunities. There remain some who genuinely prefer all women to be subservient to a man and stay in the home, too, and they always had a bad word for feminism.

The fact that feminists have been significantly successful in helping women get into the workplace, made harassment a legal action and obtained workplace protection for family leave and improved health-care for childbirth and improved police prosecution of sex crimes and domestic abuse is not often recognized.
The feminist movement has also been weakened by it's own success ...the BIG issues have been resolved.

And - just so you others know... prior to the womens movement, it was possible to get a flat tire and have a bunch of louts sit around and snicker rude comments about your body as you looked for help.
The good old days before the womens movement...weren't always all that good.

governments have always been male dominated
and have always labeled some minority group.
women have had to fight for their HUMAN rights
for centuries way back to the time they were labeled
witches for practicing medicine...burned at the stake...
and the medicine taken over by men because it
could turn a profit. girls today...and i emphasize the word..
girls.. should appreciate the fact that they can work and vote
it funny how every belief is called an....ism
mostly i think it is because "feminism" makes it sound
like socialism and zionism
you get the picture

feminism isn't a bad word. The view, articulated in the 19th century, that women are inherently equal to men and deserve equal rights and opportunities. in my country, even before colonists came and plundered our resources and my country, women were said to have some rights and duties equal to men. feminism had existed a long time even before the word came up. so i don't think it can ever be a bad word. it had not been bad for the people of our pasts, and history repeats itself, so the possibility of it becoming a bad word is far from being possible.

thank you!

I don't think feminism is a bad word. Feminists are everywhere, at home and in the work place. Feminism became a bad word when ignorant men were losing their jobs to intelligent women!

Let me just add that I don't think all men are ignorant.

in my understanding although men and women are equal the areas which they score high in are different. so both sexes are of value but they bring different strengths and weaknesses to the table. feminism in my view has failed to recognise this and so you have women who feel that behaving like a man is what is meant by equal they have always been equal feminism has simply empowered women in to thinking that they have strengths in areas that the majority of women do not observe most gay or lesbian relationships and you will still usually see a dominant (male) and a passive (female) partner. the most important thing to realise is that passive does not mean weak. My parents i would define as a traditional couple and my dad was the major bread winner but my parents were a team and i love and respect them both and on the surface he appeared to rule the roost but i know for a fact in private that was not always the case. and for me feminism has undermined those traditional roles. leaving both sexes unsure of there roles in life.

Feminism has always been a bad word because we seem unable to deal with strong women who know what they want and speak their minds.

You have to make a distinction between women's rights and human rights. If you only talk about human rights, you imply a level playing field, and that has never been the case.

And by the way, for one of my fellow responders... the questioner referred to herself in the third person. If she had used 'I', that would be the first person.

Because they took a good thing and went too far. Feminism hasn't benefited women as much as they say. Instead of women being able to work, it has created an environment where women are forced to work two jobs, one outside the home and one in the home. Rather than reason, feminists pushed an agenda that was full of lies and manipulation. The concept of feminism is terrific, however, people messed it up in the politics of it.

When Feminism transmogrified into a shameless and blind advocacy for women, regardless of the issue, I think it turned a lot of people off.

For example, feminists would argue that in the case of separation, the woman is naturally the best parent, and should be awarded custody; furthermore, she should be awarded as much child support as possible, and not be required to spend any of said money on the child. She needn't provide any accounting of where the money was spent, and if the father cannot pay, he will be labled a deadbeat dad, and thrown in prison.

See how this thinking can be seen as blind advocacy?

To me? It became a bad word when I got a flat tire and no guy stopped to help me for about twenty minutes. Politically, it became a bad word when the feminist lobby groups began to be partisan above all. Feminist groups should not have laughed off Clinton's sexual harassment (which they did, even though the Reps went overboard). Many also became one issue obsessives regarding abortion. I'm pro-choice too, but women still do not receive equal pay in many professions. That is just as important.

kja: I think you mean 3rd person.

A few years before liberal became a bad word.

In an authoritarian society, political leaders try to control your actions. In a free society political leaders try to control your thoughts.
