What are the equivalent for guys?

I guess my real question is, what are your thoughts on teen magazines and the expected social image that it feeds kids? Is it healthy? Does it clash with self-development? Does the responsibility lie more on the parents than school?

Is there really such a thing as self development? There is no such thing as a true nonconformist.

People in particular ,youth, will adopt certain styles and mannerisms usually associated with a particular clique or music genre or fashion movement and eventually will blend these into a persona of their own.

My high school history teacher wisely said "Life is a larceny." we take that which we admire in others and instill it in ourselves.

When i graduated high school i dated a girl who actually modeled for "Seventeen" magazine and she was quite down to earth and quite brilliant. She was not what some people would assume a fashion model would be which brings me to my next point.

Are those who criticize such publications in themselves setting a different standard for youth by saying. Don't be like the magazine tells you or you're beautiful just as you are. Such philosophies although well meaning can place a hinderance on a teen's social growth or self expectations. Therefore these magazines can be confidence boosters but reality must set in.

Not everyone can be glamorous but everyone should try to obtain some sense of self worth in their appearance. I'm not saying you must buy your clothes from whatever designer "Teen" tells you to but you can use them for what they were intended to be. A guide book not a rule book.

The only rule is be true to yourself and what you want for yourself and respect the decisons of others to do the same.

Just be.

Now for guys there are no real fashion magazines most teen guys don't care about that but those who do usually read men's mags such as Esquire, GQ or Details.

Well the magazine that i read is seventeen. It has some amazing articles. It has real life stories that happened to real teens and includes crisis tip lines as well as many do's and dont's for safety.

It also includes a monthly workout routine and healthy eating ideas. In the health section it will often provide tips that can save your life, things that your parents don't talk about such as the truth behind smoking and drugs.

It is a very informative magazine, i usually skip all the beauty tips and save those for later.

i think this magazine is very healthy, it brings all the life saving issues to a teen level. you don't have to feel embarrassed to ask a question. all the answers are there. I think I'm a more well rounded person b/c of it. i mean i don't need to know how to put on a condom(waiting for marriage thing) but it tells you about that(which i found out what i thought was the wrong way) parents don't talk about that and they won't. i go to a private school and they don't talk about that. my friends from public schools didn't know it either. it is a source for the younger crowd to go when they aren't getting the facts.

hope that helped.

Equivalent for guys are Maxim, MH18 and all those "workout" magazines that end up being the same as girls but with pics of semi-naked guys instead of girls and with black and gray graphics instead of pink and yellow. They will both tell you to eat out of whack so you get skinnier and show you 20 thousand adds from cover to end so you can "be cooler, smarter, prettier, hotter, sexier" and both will use the most pathetic lines to make you buy'em. (Get lucky tonight! Use fat to your advantage! How to look cool on your first time! etc.)
Of course, it's not all bad, otherwise it wouldn't sell. You'll get a few insignificant tips on how to look better (too bad they're tiny tips, not an overhaul, for example, they'll spend 5 pages on how to do your eye make up, but they won't tell you that if you've pimples, you'll just look stupid with 3 inch eyelashes. Or they will have a 10 page article on how to build a single muscle on the entire body, but won't tell you that unless you work out your entire body, you will never see results.)
Honestly, self-development isn't the responsability of school, parents, frients, etc... it's SELF-development, it's time everyone remembers that they're responsible for their own actions.

It is entertaining and helpful for teen girls. Not only is it about make-up and fashion, but there are also relationship advice, family issues, and even health issues that are covered. There is also information about sex since it is a very talked about issue among teens, but "Teen" and "Covergirl" are not as detailed as "Cosmopolitan" and all the other "Big Girl" magazines.

If there's one thing in the world that'll make you feel ugly, it's beauty magazines. The smartest thing I ever did was get rid of all of my cosmos.
