Because monopolies are illegal except where an Act of Parliament permits them, in this case The Broadcasting Act.
There used to be many monopolies in the UK:-
British Rail
National Coal Board
British Gas
The Water Board
etc etc
Now there is only The National Board For Mind Numbing Stupidity (also known as The Government)

The government are the only legalised monopoly in the country.
I think I am right in saying that Lotteries are still illegal in this country but the government said lets make some mo o ore money and start a lottery as we have the monopoly on legislation we can and we can monopolise that by not letting anyone else do it!
So every other game of chance has to be constructed around ridiculous questions or supposedly picking football teams that might draw.

license money? Are you talking about things we pay to the government? The government although it seems like a monopoly.....we can't really call it that...becauses it collects our taxes to supposedly provide services for us....and what the heck would we do with 2-3 more governments in this country?

as in the BBC I suppose you mean, I 'm with you on that one.
They have the monopoly on making us pay for something we probably could live without.
Adverts pay for other TV channels and have better programmes, either the BBC should go or they should change to advertising
