At work, a box fell from a shelf onto my acromial region. In the emergency room, the physician felt that the head of my humerus had moved into the axilla. What specifically has happened to my shoulder?

You dislocated your shoulder, Cyber Spacer. Sorry, I hope it gets better soon!

Good luck!

The shoulder should sit in the glenoid under the acromium and the end of the clavicle. If you had dislocated it they would have had to put ot back before you left and you would know they had done it as it involves a great deal of pulling on your sore arm to get it to go back into joint. Your axilla is your armpit.
The shoulder joint is naturally unstable to allow the range of movement from it i.e. it's a very shallow joint. Thinking about it, you sound like you have had a dislocation to feel the head of your humerus in your axilla.

you already know probably what i'm gonna say, but you may have injured, or dislocated your shoulder or the joint that connects your clavicle to your shoulder blade called your acromioclavicular joint. i suggest seeing your doc to make sure you didn't injure any surrounding blood vessels or nerves. then i think physical therapy may be your next step. good luck! if you are noticing your arm falling asleep or you are having shooting pains in your arm or numbness in your arm go and see your doc now because these are the symptoms of a injured blood vessel or nerve respectively.

The arm came out of it's socket at your shoulder and was displaced downward toward your armpit (axilla). That probably really hurts.

You've dislocated your bloody shoulder by the sounds of things!! He's basically saying the top of your upper arm bone has moved into your armpit, which means that it's completely come out of socket.

your shoulder has has suffered an inferior dislocation causing the humerus to move downward into the axillary region.

You've hurt it. If it was a full dislocation, the doc would have sent you to hospital. Don't worry. It will hurt for a few days but it will get better.
