I think most of the people who come out and say they hate Abercrombie has nothing to do with the style.
It's because of Abercrombie's notorious racism in hiring employees and the offensive use of Chinese "characters" in their graphic tees a while back. Abercrombie models are all white, suggesting that they target to only appeal to white consumers, which made a huge contraversy on discrimination. People I know who say they hate Abercrombie usually associates Abercrombie with racism.
Personally, I (being not white) walked in the 5th Ave location of Abercrombie in NYC, had less than desirable customer service compared to my white peers, walked out, and never went back. Below are some articles I googled.

Well, let's compare the two:
Abercrombie: good quality, expensive, poor customer service (I've had many friends and my sister work at Abercrombie and all say that good customer service is not encouraged.)
Hollister: poor quality, cheap, decent customer service.
I will probably agree with you that most of the people that hate abercrombie are probably the people that can't afford it. But will argue with you on once you go Abercrombie you can't go back, because I first started wearing Abercrombie and hated Hollister. However in the end I just could not justify spending $40 on a sequined tank that I would wear for one season at Abercrombie when I could get it at Hollister for half the price. I now choose Hollister because it is better for my bank account.

And why would you want to dress like everyone else? Abercrombie is not expensive and the clothes looks like $hit. I wouldn't even take anything there given to me for free. Unless, you like looking like a preppy schoolboy/girl. Which to me is the ugliest style of clothing.

It is a phases in fashion. It really doesn't matter, however people think ambercrombie charges more for clothes. Just buy what you feel like complements you.
