they use echolocation. the ultrasound they emit will reflect of the prey and an echo will bounce back to the bat. they then know that the prey is there

I thought they used Ultrasound to stop them colliding with objects rather than catch their prey but I'm probably wrong. Good question - I'll be interested to see the answers !

They detect the direction, magnitude and delay of bounced back noise (echoes) from their prey enabling them to deduce the direction, size, speed and distance of their prey.

It's actually a biological form of sonar, very similar to the way the sperm whale hunts for squid in very deep, light-less water.
